Modern Addition, Traditional Minneapolis Home

A remodel is underway. Take a look inside.

Follow along as we build a contemporary 2-story Addition on their traditional American Foursquare style home.

Exterior

This unique Minneapolis Addition features modern exterior materials. Take a look at installing the exterior finishes as this project gets closer to the finish line.

We built the deck off the Master Bedroom with materials designed for low-maintenance, but tough enough to stand up to a Minnesota winter. The pressure treated posts, covered with black composite sleeves support the deck roof. Because the Sunroom roof/Master Bedroom deck has a flat roof, it needs a rubber membrane for protection against moisture. Also, the Sunroom roof will also have a slight pitch to help with drainage. To compensate for the pitch, sleepers (tapered joists) installed above the rubber membrane create a level surface to mount the low-maintenance TREX® composite decking. Heavy cable installed between the porch supports finishes the deck railing.

HARDIEPANEL® cement fiber siding was chosen for its modern look. The siding comes in 4 x 8 sheets that can be cut to fit the home’s exterior siding plan. The siding edges are finished with a metal channel system. The metal channel is mostly aesthetic but does function as a flashing between panels to protect against moisture. The siding is nailed in place and then the nails are painted to match the siding color along with the metal channel.

Our clients liked the look of wood siding they saw on modern buildings around town, so we used Clear Western Red Cedar wood siding and Knotty Western Red Cedar on the porch ceiling. The cedar siding is a tongue and groove system with a blind nail installation. The outside corner, where two faces of the wood siding meet, features a mitered finish.
