South Minneapolis Historic Tudor: Primary Suite & Guest Bath

Honoring a 1928 home while creating a spa-like retreat

When our clients decided to address water damage in their 1928 Tudor’s main bathroom, they saw an opportunity to reimagine the space entirely. The design team preserved the spirit of the original pink-and-black bathroom through a fresh interpretation—centering the remodel on a vivid swan wallpaper meaningful to the couple. The renovated space features a reconfigured layout with a large walk-in shower, a generous vanity, and improved storage. The project expanded to include an entirely new primary en-suite bathroom inspired by the dark, moody Icelandic spas the homeowners frequent. Featuring custom black tadelakt plaster, a soaking tub, a spacious walk-in shower, and a double vanity, the dramatic space required structural modifications to the vaulted dormer walls—resulting in a luxurious retreat that feels as though it’s always belonged in this historic home.

“To honor the spirit of the original bathroom, we intentionally leaned back into the pink-and-black palette— with a fresh interpretation. The design came together around an incredible black-and-soft-pink swan wallpaper, a perfect nod to the original aesthetic and a meaningful detail for the clients, who love swans.” – White Crane Designer

“The design inspiration for this space came from a spa the clients frequently stay at in Iceland—dark, moody, and immersive. After reviewing imagery together, we knew the right material for the space was tadelakt, a traditional waterproof plaster ideal for wet environments.” – White Crane Designer
