Timeless Character Near Lake Nokomis

A remodel is underway. Take a look inside.

Follow along as we build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) above a new garage in South Minneapolis.

Demolition

We pulled all the lathe from the ceiling in what will become the Lower Level Family Room.

It’s demolition time! It will take 5 days to demo the unfinished basement, getting it ready to be transformed into a finished Lower Level creating more livable space for this family.

Working Around Challenges

Lead dust was extremely difficult to manage, it was coming through the floor, which was the demoed ceiling in the Lower Level, and was especially concerning with 2 young children in the home. To manage lead dust, White Crane Project Manager Bill and the demo crew were very diligent about resealing the work zone, dusting and cleaning up the residue as it appeared.

To remove three radiators, the hot water heating system had to be drained and brought back up in the same day. To cause the family the least amount of stress, we made this happen as quickly as possible, as it is the deep freeze of winter.

Demo Prep

We will be masking off 2 separate areas of the house, the Upper-Level Bathroom and the entire Lower Level, both for lead safe removal and protection of the rest of the home.

The Upper Kids Bath has been completely demoed down to the studs, revealing framing and carpentry original to the 1926 home.

During the demo, we found a handwritten letter dated February 7th, 1927 (from Bertha and Rod to Ernest “Babe”) in its original envelope in the wall of the linen closet that was removed in the upper-level Bathroom. It was written to a man that lived in this home from friends in CA that were shipping him his favorite ravioli.
